People who have read the description of the upcoming Poppin' Pinkie Pie Game might have noticed that it mentioned that you can "Unlock the character in the My Little Pony Friendship Celebration app". While we didn't focus on that initially, we have now found out that this could be a huge thing. According to sources at the UK Toy Fair, Hasbro showed various new Cutie Mark Magic ponies (wrap-up coming soon) with QR-like codes in the shape of hearts (see mock-up above). The codes can be used in a new My Little Pony app, that is still in development, to unlock the character in the app. This seems like an approach from Hasbro to make your physical pony collection also available on your phone or tablet. Other features of the app have yet to be announced nor do we have an accurate image of the QR codes.
I'm interested in the exact way that Hasbro will use the QR codes to scan the ponies. If the codes are not unique, then someone could simply put all the QR codes online for everyone to scan. And if the codes are unique, then Hasbro should be sure that you can't simply scan them through the packaging in stores.
We hope to get some images of the venue as the Toy Fair continues for 2 more days.

Hasbro is already doing the same with their Transformers: Robots in Disguise toyline. Each figure has an QR-code with their Autobot or Decepticon insignia. When you scan them you can unlock new characters or weapons in their game app. Still I'm wondering if these QR-codes will replace the cutiemarks, or else on which part of the Pony they will be applied. .
ReplyDeleteCan't wait!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they'll simply put the QR code somewhere inside the package so you'll have to buy the toy to get it. Also, maybe it'll be a one time use thing so people can't share codes once they've been scanned.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it will be along the lines of the G3 ponies that had magnets? Putting the QR codes on a hoof! It would keep the codes secure till you open the figure.
